Often referred to as the “Father of all Low carb diets” the Atkins diet follows the rule of cutting down on the carbohydrate intake and easily allows everyone to make a diet plan around this rule which would suit them.

The NO Food List:

Like any other low carbohydrate diet plan the total carbohydrate intake is under scrutiny and sugars and other refined grain flour has to be off your food list permanently. Also a strict vigilance has to be kept on your caffeine and alcohol intake. This diet plan starts with a lot of restriction in the initial phases and slowly with time depending on as to how your body reacts to the diet subsequent changes can be made.

Structure of the Diet:

The diet starts with a complete ban on carbohydrates and then slowly progresses by adding specific types and amounts of carbohydrates in later stages. This variation gives the dieter a lot of options to play around with.

Phases:

The Atkins diet plan can be broadly divided into the phases of Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, Pre-maintenance and maintenance. The duration of each stage depend upon the fitness level of the individual. With a progression from one stage to the other, complex carbohydrates are slowly introduced to the dieters' food plan leaving out the refined and sugar laden carbohydrate options. By the time the individual reaches the maintenance stage he is consuming the amount of carbohydrate which would allow him to maintain the weight he has finally achieved through this diet regime.
